Change, transition, transformation, conversion, renovation, innovation, metamorphosis, revolution, modification, adaptation.  All these terms have recently acquired a strong notoriety. For instance, the term transition is become very famous, but it is often used as an "umbrella" concept to designate a multiplicity of phenomena and processes. We must shed some light on the meanings attributed to this and other terms. These terms are often used interchangeably and mostly metaphorically to identify pathways out of the ecological and climate crisis. While a free and generic use of these concepts can offer a broad basis of agreement, a lack of conceptual clarity, particularly regarding the characteristics that make change "transformative" and lasting, can nullify their contribution to status quo change. Moreover, we must understand how and to whom transition works.
